Air Quality Interns

The Appalachian Mountain Club Research Department is seeking an air quality intern for the summer of 2007. Our department conducts research to inform conservation policy related to mountain regions throughout the northeastern United States. The Research Department operates air quality monitoring sites in the White Mountains of New Hampshire including two tropospheric ozone monitoring sites, two fine particulate matter (PM2.5) monitoring sites and acid cloud and rain collectors.

One summer research assistant will be needed to manage the set up, operation, and take down of the air quality-monitoring sites, as well as to take measurements and to compile and analyze the resulting data. This position will be based at the Camp Dodge/Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.  A more complete job description can be provided; contact Georgia Murray - amcjob24@outdoors.org.

Qualifications

  • Enrollment in or graduation from an undergraduate degree program in the sciences.
  • Strong oral communications skills.
  • Experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Good attention to detail, ability to carefully collect and document data, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Computer skills, especially MS Excel and Word.
  • Able to carry at least 50 pounds for 1.5 miles over rugged terrain.

Desirable Qualifications

  • A two year commitment to work at the AMC.
  • Background in chemistry and statistics.
  • Mechanical ability.
  • Basic first aid and outdoor skills.

Compensation will range from $260-$280 a week depending on qualifications. Interns are provided room and board.
