The Appalachian Mountain Club has a 125-year history of working to preserve wild places in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Working with over 90,000 members and supporters throughout the region, AMC’s Conservation Department promotes the protection of clean air, clean water, and rugged open spaces. We have full- and part-time unpaid positions available for interns willing to work at least three months; longer commitments of six to 12 months are preferred. The land conservation intern could be located either in AMC’s Boston, MA, Hallowell, ME, or Bethlehem, PA office. The southern New England intern will be located in either Boston or Sheffield, MA. We seek the following interns during 2007:
1. Conservation Funding Intern:
AMC is working to increase federal funding of parks and open space protection from Maine to Maryland. Our land conservation intern will be responsible for the following:
- Building local support for land conservation funding in key Congressional districts,
- Working with other conservation groups to increase their effectiveness in this campaign,
- Organizing multiple events for elected officials and the media, and
- Preparing and distributing communications materials to members and activists.
2. Southern New England Intern:
AMC is expanding our programs in southern New England, stretching from northwest Connecticut through western Massachusetts into southern New Hampshire. The Southern New England Intern will participate in the following:
- Mobilizing local support for a new National Scenic Trail in MA and CT,
- Identifying opportunities to protect outdoor recreational resources from the Quabbin Reservoir (MA) to Mt. Cardigan (NH), and
- Engaging AMC’s members in an effort to increase state investment in Massachusetts’ parks and forests.
Employment Qualifications for either internship
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in conservation, the outdoors and/or grassroots organizing
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Willingness to travel
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Some college and/or related work experience preferred.
