Sustainability Analysis and Planning Intern, Cold River Camp, Summer 2008

North Chatham, New Hampshire (Evan's Notch)

Summary: Cold River Camp is an AMC facility managed by a volunteer committee and hired professional staff. It is east of Mt. Washington, in a quiet valley on the border of Maine. The Camp is functional from early May to late September and provides service to the public from early July through mid-September. Families and others attend Camp for usually a week at a time, enjoying hiking, swimming, and nature. The Camp’s capacity is 72 guests; it employs 14 staff and crew. The Camp Committee and managers are interested in studying the Camp's impact and using the data gathered in strategic planning for the future.

Work Conditions:  The Internship is available Summer 2008 for a total of 100 hours of work. Flexible work hours, room & board provided when on site, $750 stipend for the season. 
Starting:  Mid-June, 2008 (flexible)          Ending: by early September, 2008

The intern will initially spend time at the Camp and with managers, learning Camp systems.  Project research, interviews, writing, and other tasks may be conducted at Camp or elsewhere, as needed and at student’s discretion.  While at Camp, the student will be provided room and board and may enjoy the facility and area during time off. 

Responsibilities
This is a self-contained project that the intern will take as far as possible. The job will involve…

  • conducting a baseline analysis of the Camp’s energy consumption and other indicators of sustainability (recycling, water use, wastewater management, purchased food and materials, vendor practices);
  • creating and maintaining an educational display regarding the project and the topic for a camp public area;
  • researching alternative energy options, materials, supplies, and systems;
  • assisting in developing recommendations for the Camp Committee;
  • and assisting in completing certification for NH Sustainable Lodging & Restaurant certification.

  • Ability to self motivate
  • Ability to work independently to get projects done,
  • Ability to interview and work with various people,
  • Strong interest in – and knowledge of - sustainable development, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, and internet resources.
  • Work will require on-site investigation and analysis, as well as online and other research.
  • You will need your own transportation, and having a portable computer is a plus
