Interpretive Naturalist Intern, Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Gorham, NH

The Interpretive Naturalist Intern assists in the development, coordination, and delivery of a variety of interpretative programs at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. (S)he works closely with other staff and volunteers to connect our guests to the natural and cultural history of the area, as well as teach conservation principles. AMC depends on this self-motivated, skilled individual to professionally represent our organization and ensure an enjoyable and educational mountain experience for each overnight guest and day visitor.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver “active” educational programs in and around the Visitor Center throughout the day on topics ranging from natural and cultural history, to backcountry safety, to conservation of resources. Possible programs include guided hikes and walks.  

  • Assist in the development and maintenance of “passive” educational materials including program manuals, on-site libraries and games, self-guided activities, posters, displays.

  • Serve as an interpretive resource for guests, visitors, volunteers, and staff when at the Visitor Center including greeting guests as they arrive and announcing program options during meal times.

  • Assist with the on-site promotion of programs and activities.

  • Assist supervisor with administrative duties including, but not limited to, coordinating groups, data entry, and preparing program materials.

  • Plan and develop an interpretive project that will benefit the Visitor Center and/or Lodge.

Employment Qualifications

  • Excellent guest service skills, and a demonstrated commitment to the goals of the AMC. Review our web site  for information on the organization.

  • Exemplary communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, organizational ability, some experience in program delivery and techniques, flexibility to handle multiple tasks in different areas at once.

  • Practical and academic background in one or more of the following areas: environmental education, natural history and/ or interpretation.

  • Familiarity with the natural history of the northeastern US,  wilderness first aid certification is desirable. 

  • Valid enrollment in an academic institution.

Details of an Internship with the AMC

  • The standard work schedule for this internship position involves 5 days on and 2 days off.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Internship length is negotiable, but should be minimum of 10 weeks.
  • Dorm-style, shared room and board included.
  • Possible stipend to be determined.
  • Accepting applications year round
