The Naturalist Guide at Pinkham will report to the full-time Senior Interpretive Naturalist. He/she will deliver and implement high quality educational opportunities for guests and visitors with the goals of sparking interest in outdoor recreation and a connection with the natural world. Close cooperation and coordination with on-site staff and others will be essential for the success of this position. This is a seasonal, fulltime, non-exempt position with optional medical benefits. Room and board is available for seasonal employees on site.
Responsibilities
- Instruct and deliver programs in season that focus on backcountry skills and safety, local natural and cultural history and other educational themes.
- Develop additional programs beyond those already planned as time and resources permit.
- Instruct and deliver multi-day seasonal programs intended for a range of audiences including families, adults, and seniors that focus on local natural and cultural history, backcountry skills and safety, and other educational themes.
- Promote and lead the above programs, evaluate and organize materials, maintain equipment and keep records pertaining to the programs.
- Ensure that the safety of participants is a top priority, all programs are family oriented and inclusive, and that content is accurate and updated.
- Maintain all program related materials and areas for guests and visitors as directed by the Senior Interpretive Naturalist. Develop additional materials as time and resources permit.
- Promote the AMC’s Junior Naturalist program for children, including stocking books and patches on-site and ensuring recognition of new junior naturalists at dinner or breakfast.
- Maintain “passive” educational materials on-site, including libraries and games, Junior Naturalist materials, posters, displays, and self guided activity boxes. Develop additional materials as time and resources permit.
- Meet regularly with the Senior Interpretive Naturalist to assess progress and make needed changes to the program. Complete end-of-season report.
- Conduct programmatic outreach efforts as assigned for club events, local schools, organizations, and groups.
- Other duties as assigned.
Employment Qualifications
- The Pinkham Naturalist Guide position requires excellent guest service skills, organizational ability, public speaking experience, and a demonstrated commitment to the goals of the organization.
- Practical and academic background in environmental education, outdoor recreation or interpretation is preferred.
- Prior visitor center or outdoor education center experience, knowledge of the ecology of the northeast, outdoor trip leading and backcountry experience is preferred.
- Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification and a valid driver’s license are required.
- Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.
