Hut stay a fantasy come true
Patriot Ledger
July 27, 2002
An article in the (Quincy, Mass.) Patriot Ledger featured a hut trip for a mom and her children. Writer Jody Feinberg had fantasized about a backcountry trip in which she and her children could enjoy "an overnight adventure — without the hassle of carrying a tent or cooking meals." After a visit to the AMC's Lonesome Lake Hut, she wrote, "The reality, it turns out, matched my fantasy." In addition to acknowledging mountain hospitality, she highlighted the educational opportunities offered at the huts, especially for kids.
Trail protection recognition
Nashua (N.H.) Telegraph
July 19, 2002
The AMC's extensive trail-maintenance work — as well as recent successes in working with landowners, the Trust for Public Land, and the White Mountain National Forest to protect trailheads from potential closure — were covered in a Telegraph article by Alasdair Stewart.
AMC White Mountain Guide a "cool" item
Boston Globe
July 7, 2002
The Boston Globe lauded the AMC's White Mountain Guide, published since 1907, as a quintessentially cool, and useful, souvenir of New Hampshire and the White Mountains. Then in its 26th edition (the 27th edition has since been released), the guide provides detailed trail information about the region, prompting the Globe to comment that "This hiker's bible is essential when visiting the Granite State."
Midsize trails a good option for many
Boston Sunday Herald
July 7, 2002
An article about hiking midsize trails recommended the AMC as a source of information on hiking in New England and described the new Grafton Loop Trail, which the AMC is helping to build in Maine. Midsize trails such as this one are a good choice for hikers who seek more than a day hike, but are not quite ready for ultra-long routes such as the Appalachian Trail.
Huts in flight
Attache magazine
July 2002
Zealand Falls Hut was the focus of an article in US Airways' in-flight magazine on the White Mountain hut experience. "At 2,700 feet, Zealand Falls Hut is the easiest to hike to," writes author and hiker Christine Schultz. "On the way up, hikers have been known to spot moose and other wildlife. Only at the end does the trail turn steeply upward for 300 feet over a stone-staired section. It is just enough of a climb to make you feel you've earned your place on the bench outside the hut with its sweeping view down the valley and out to distant peaks."
