Robbins cinquefoil recovery praised

Recovery of the rare alpine plant, Robbins cinquefoil, and its subsequent removal from the federal Endangered Species List was highlighted as a success story in a piece on biodiversity. Recognition of endangered species was among the "Top 100 Science Stories of 2002" ranked by the magazine. Along with partners from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the New England Wildflower Society, the AMC has played a key role in the recovery of Robbins cinquefoil, which grows nowhere else on Earth but in the White Mountains, N.H.

A syndicated article about Lonesome Lake Hut appeared in multiple newspapers around the region. The article announced that the AMC has opened Lonesome Lake Hut to winter outdoor enthusiasts for the first time. The hut is available for use on a self-service basis, but reservations are required. Women on High received a very positive review in the Travel Section of the Boston Globe. The review highlighted the experiences of women in the book and included information on purchasing a copy of Rebecca Brown's book.


Column highlights progress on the AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch

A full-color photo of the Highland Center at Crawford Notch accompanied an article about the construction of the newest AMC destination. The article highlighted the generous contributions of L.L. Bean and the excellent work of the contractor, MacMillin Company. The article also provided basic information about the Highland Center at Crawford Notch, including the opening date, number of rooms, and activities available to guests.

AMC scientist discusses wilderness on Maine television

AMC Senior Staff Scientist Dave Publicover was interviewed for the Maine Public Broadcasting TV series, "Quest," about exploring the natural world. Dave provided perspectives on the values of wilderness and the challenges facing the Northern Forest.


Highland Center highlighted on Chronicle program

"Chronicle", a daily newsmagazine highlighting the Northeast, featured the AMC in a number of different ways. The first part of the segment included information about hiking Mount Washington. Then, the segment highlighted Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and Cody Michaels, a pianist who plays there. The final portion of the segment focused on the construction of the Highland Center at Crawford Notch.


Air quality an issue in op-ed

The AMC's opposition to the EPA's proposed changes to a key provision of the Clean Air Act was expressed in an opinion piece from AMC Mid-Atlantic Conservation Advocate Jad Daley and Air Quality Scientist Georgia Murray. It appeared on the op-ed page of New Jersey's The Times of Trenton.


Women on High highlighted in national magazine
National Geographic Adventure

AMC's Women on High received a favorable review in the Books Section of National Geographic Adventure. The review also included a picture of the book's cover.


Zealand Falls Hut ranked nationally
Skiing

January 2003
Zealand Falls Hut was highlighted as one of the top 15 backcountry ski destinations in the United States in Skiing Magazine. The list highlights backcountry skiing in the White Mountains and the route to Zealand Falls Hut.

Gorman promotes Northeastern Wilds on radio

In preparation for an annual fund drive, NHPR interviewed author Stephen Gorman than ran the taped interview multiple times during the fund drive. The AMC provided several copies of Northeastern Wilds to NHPR as gifts for donors. The interview is slated to run again in the spring.
