The AMC’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center achieved a prestigious “Editor’s Picks” award as the “Best Cheap Eats in the White Mountains” in the 2003 “Best of NH” awards. The magazine lauded the visitor center’s meals as “plentiful, hearty, and cooked from scratch.”
Hit the trail and learn an outdoor skill

The AMC’s Outdoor Adventures and Workshops and skills training programs were highlighted in a Yankee feature story on learning vacations. Acknowledging the AMC’s 125 years of outdoor expertise, the magazine noted that participants are “guaranteed to walk out of the woods with a new appreciation of nature and a refreshed outlook on life.”

Northeastern Wilds: Journeys of Discovery in the Northern Forest, by writer and photographer Stephen Gorman, was reviewed in The Outdoor Message. Author Stephen Gorman also appeared on Vermont Public Radio's “Switchboard” where he answered questions from callers about the Northern Forest. Newscaster Bill Green took viewers out on the trail with Gorman for a piece about the book for Green’s weekly television program, “The Maine Outdoors,” which airs on channel 6 in Portland, Maine.

Publication of the 27th Edition of the AMC White Mountain Guide was highlighted in The Union Leader’s “Outdoors with the AMC” column. The Conway Daily Sun columnist Ed Parsons also reviewed the new guide, and interviewed Gene Daniell and Steven D. Smith for the article. And Valley Vision broadcast coverage of a recent “Meet the Authors” event at White Birch Books in North Conway, N.H. Co-author Steve Smith and cartographer Larry Garland discussed the process of updating the popular hiking guide, which has been published by AMC since 1907.

Alaska hut system considered

The Alaska Huts Association is proposing to create a hut system in Alaska, and Alaska Public Radio looked to the AMC for insight on its celebrated system of White Mountain huts for an hour-long radio call-in show. AMC Public Affairs Director Rob Burbank was a guest on the “Talk of Alaska” program that reached the entire state of Alaska on July 22. He discussed the history of the AMC huts as well as the AMC’s dedication to mountain stewardship and environmentally sensitive operations.

Grafton Loop highlighted

This “Outdoors” section feature story on the Grafton Loop trail highlighted the efforts of AMC volunteers and other Grafton Loop Coalition members who are working tirelessly to complete the Grafton Loop Trail, a new 42-mile-long loop trail in western Maine. Writer Deirdre Fleming provided a wealth of information about the coordination of the groups involved in planning and building the trail. The eastern portion of the trail opened on National Trails Day, and AMC volunteers and staff are now working on the western portion, slated to open in 2005.

The conference, which drew more than 750 participants from around the nation, was the focus of a news story on the state of the AT in The New Hampshire Sunday News and on the AP wire, as well as news feature television coverage by New England Cable News (NECN) and CNN.
