Women on High inspires expedition

The Sunday Monitor in Concord, N.H., featured an article based on Rebecca Brown’s Women on High: Pioneers of Mountaineering. Brown was interviewed for the article, which included the accomplishments of Annie Smith Peck, one of the women profiled in the book. Women on High was also mentioned in an article in Couloir about climber and skier Alison Gannett, who cites the book as inspiration for a planned women’s expedition to Alaska, Peru, India, and Pakistan to retrace the paths of three women featured in Brown’s book.


The Highland Center gets ink in Maryland

Columnist Candus Thomson wrote about the Highland Center at Crawford Notch in her regular outdoors column, “On the Outdoors.” Thomson highlighted school groups on site, an Elderhostel group, L.L. Bean contribution to the Highland Center, the AMC’s mission, and the overall experience of staying at the Highland Center.

The Highland Center’s grand opening on Oct. 10-11 brought hundreds of people to the Highland Center in Crawford Notch, N.H., to enjoy a formal grand opening ceremony and an open house. Some highlights of the grand opening included welcoming remarks from Twin Mountain Selectman Bill Wright, comments by Brad and Barbara Washburn, the presentation of the AMC’s Conservation Champion Award to U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), comments from U.S. Sen. Jeb Bradley (R-New Hampshire), comments from L.L. Bean Chairman Leon Gorman, and a formal ribbon cutting. The grand opening also featured AMC staff providing information about AMC programs and the wide variety of opportunities for adventure, learning, and lodging at the Highland Center at Crawford Notch.


A Mountain Classroom makes the grade!

A lengthy article highlighting the elements of the AMC’s A Mountain Classroom program and partnership with Antioch New England appeared on the front page of the Environment Section of this New Hampshire newspaper. The article, written by Erica Cohen, also included a photo of A Mountain Classroom Director Peter Berg, communicating with students atop a vista in Crawford Notch.
