Joe Brigham’s 40-year helicopter pilot career has led to many interesting jobs, including his work with the AMC lifting construction materials and supplies to the AMC White Mountains huts. The Moosehead Lake Snofest kicked off two weeks of events with a 100-mile sled dog race organized by the AMC in collaboration with Greenville and Brownville town officials. The Central Maine Morning Sentinel reported that the race was born out of a heightened focus on the region’s eco-tourism opportunities and non-motorized sports like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and dogsledding, which are being promoted by the AMC. In addition to offering use of its land for the race, the AMC planned to hold navigation, winter survival, and backcountry skiing workshops as part of the events and activities taking place during Snofest.

The AMC has finalized an agreement with Citizens Bank and Coastal Enterprises Inc. for $17 million long-term, fixed-rate financing in support of the AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative. The financing is based on the federal New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC) program, a federal incentive for investments in low-income areas, and will provide at least $5 million in savings. The AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative is designed to attract new “green” tourism and jobs to the region, as well as to continue supporting the local economy through sustainable forestry and traditional use.
