Paula Tracy’s Union Leader feature discussed the experiential outdoor education focus at Highland Center and highlighted “A Mountain Classroom” programs being offered at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Cardigan Lodge, and AMC Huts. A feature article by Edith Tucker in the Coos County Democrat on November 2 quoted AMC instructors, school administrators, and students about the experience.



Outdoors with the AMC: 'Green' lodging seminar focuses on energy efficiency, environment

The Appalachian Mountain Club’s Highland Center at Crawford Notch was the host site for a seminar by the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association’s Sustainable Lodging Program on environmentally sensitive lodging practices. At the seminar, AMC was awarded “Environmental Champion” status for its environmentally sensitive operations at the Highland Center and at the Joe Dodge Lodge and Pinkham Notch Visitor Center.

AMC earns “Environmental Champion” status

Outdoors with the AMC: Rate the view to aid New Hampshire air quality

A new research project being conducted by the AMC and the state of New Hampshire at several state fire towers gives hikers a chance to rate the view and contribute findings to a long-term database on air quality in the Granite State. The effort is an outgrowth of the AMC's Mountain Watch program, which engages hikers in collecting scientific data on air quality, weather and plant growth patterns in the mountains.
