AMC Field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits

by Nancy Slack & Allison W. Bell

Back in print by popular demand, this practical field guide takes explorers on a journey through the major alpine areas of northern New England. This fascinating ecosystem is home to delicate flowers, hardy plants, and remarkable wildlife that survive in the harsh climate of New England’s highest ranges, from Mount Washington and the Franconia Range to Mounts Katahdin and Mansfield.

With more than 200 full-color photographs, the AMC Field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits is the definitive guide to this unique area, helping hikers, naturalists, and birders identify plants, birds, and mammals.  The alpine zone above treeline has some of the most extreme weather in the country, even in summer. Boots of unwary hikers can trample rare and endangered native plants. Not only will nature lovers learn to identify the area’s flora and fauna, they’ll also learn how these delicate flowers and plants survive in their alpine surroundings—and why it’s important to protect them. New to this edition is a flowering chart for identifying New England alpine plants to help hikers quickly identify unknown plants. Readers will also find a new section on the phenology of the alpine zone, which offers a detailed look at climate change and its potential impact on the environment by examining the responses of plants to seasonal changes in their environments.

AMC Field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits makes a visit to New England’s mountains a more rewarding, colorful, and informative experience.
