FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 6, 2007
This summer, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) will offer outdoor adventure vacation options tailor-made for families of all ages—whether it is kids getting their first taste of big mountain adventure at AMC Huts or several generations joining an AMC family camp. AMC lodges, mountain huts, and outdoor adventure programs in the White Mountains and Lakes Region of New Hampshire, Moosehead Lake Region of Maine, and Delaware Water Gap of New Jersey provide a variety of unique, family-friendly outdoor experiences based on a 119-year history of mountain hospitality.
AMC makes it easy for families to get out and enjoy the Northeast outdoors:
- New for this summer, AMC is further expanding its weeklong Family Adventure Camps program, adding additional weeks and a new destination in Maine.
- Also new this summer, kids stay for half-off the regular price at Lonesome Lake Hut. A family favorite and an easy hike for young kids, Lonesome Lake Hut offers a mix of traditional, century-old mountain hospitality, sustainable practices, and environmental learning.
- AMC will continue to roll out its Outdoor Explorations program, introduced this winter, with many family-friendly, walk-on naturalist and outdoor skills programs offered free to guests at White Mountain lodges.
- AMC’s Teen Wilderness Adventures program gives 12- to 18-year-olds an opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills while backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, or mountain biking as part of an expert-led group.

AMC Weeklong Family Adventure Camps
Family Adventure Camps provide a multi-generation vacation alternative to more traditional summer camps exclusively for kids. Led by expert AMC staff, AMC’s Family Adventure Camps will be offered with an expanded schedule at all AMC lodges in Maine, New Hampshire, and New Jersey this summer. Designed especially for families with kids ages 5–12, the camps combine daily guided activities, outdoor skills programs, and evening events—plus all lodging and meals—with time to relax together and meet other families. Each Family Adventure Camp takes advantage of the unique natural features of its location, and activities, which vary by destination, include bird watching, geology adventure hikes, canoeing and kayaking, and AMC’s Junior Naturalist program. Rates start at $295, plus taxes, for members ($328 for non-members). Child rates start at $195, plus taxes, for members ($217 for non-members).
Kids Half-Off at AMC Huts and Lodge-to-Hut Hiking
As part of the oldest and only full-service mountain hut chain in the United States, AMC’s Lonesome Lake Hut offers families a truly unique outdoor adventure experience. AMC Huts located a day’s hike apart along the Appalachian Trail provide a great way for families to get a taste of the backcountry without having to carry a tent and extra food. This summer, stay midweek any Sunday–Thursday night at Lonesome Lake Hut during the full-service season and pay just $24 per child/night, plus taxes, for members ($26.50 for non-members). This savings of 50 percent includes free naturalist programs, bunk lodging, dinner, and breakfast—plus the chance to meet new friends against the spectacular backdrop of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Try any of AMC’s seven other huts midweek during June or the last week of August and enjoy these same great savings for kids. Child rates apply to kids ages 12 and under.
AMC Outdoor Explorations
Following the introduction of AMC Outdoor Explorations this winter, AMC will offer a slate of new programs this summer. AMC Outdoor Explorations offers options ranging from free, one-hour, walk-on outdoor skills clinics designed for all ages, including families with young kids, to fee-based, multi-day introductory adventures such as guided hut adventures and a photography workshop geared toward older families and adults. One-hour to half-day walk-on Outdoor Explorations offered at AMC lodges in New Hampshire’s White Mountains this summer will include activities such as guided walks, animal tracking, and map and compass skills—all free to guests.
AMC Teen Wilderness Adventures
AMC will offer over 30 different Teen Wilderness Adventures geared toward ages 12 to 18 this summer. This expert-led program gives teens an opportunity independent of their families to gain outdoors experience, build confidence, and make new friends. Programs range from short 5- to 7-day sessions up to a 28-day multi-sport expedition. A 25-day outdoor leadership training session is also offered for teens 16-18. Programs include activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking in beautiful Maine and New Hampshire locations. Summer programs start at $660 per person ($733 for non-members) for a five-day, single-activity program. A detailed program schedule is available on www.outdoors.org/teenwilderness.
