Maine Woods Discovery experience features wilderness lodges during peak fall foliage and fly-fishing season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 31, 2009
The wilderness that inspired Thoreau has a softer side—paddling on a quiet pond at sunset, stealing away on a gentle hike to secluded views, spying a moose emerge from the woods, fly fishing at sunrise, and relaxing on a cabin porch without any distractions.
The
Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC)
Maine Woods Discovery package, offered at the AMC's two
Maine Wilderness Lodges, showcases these authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences, plus includes a tour of Moosehead Lake on board the historic steamship Katahdin. Guests enjoy the comfort of a private cabin and freshly prepared meals at the AMC’s
Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins or
Medawisla Wilderness Lodge and Cabins. A custom fly kit from the Maine Guide Fly Shop and a North Woods travel kit from Maine Mountain Soap and Candle complete the package.
Offered throughout this summer and until October 10, 2009, the three-night package lets guests experience the spectacular fall foliage season in northern New England and peak fly fishing during the cooler days of late September. “Off-the-grid” locations at the AMC’s Maine Wilderness Lodges provide rare opportunities for quiet foliage walks and longer hikes, paddling on remote ponds with fall colors reflecting against the water’s surface, and crisp, dark nights for stargazing.
At Little Lyford, walk along the Pleasant River to waterfalls at Gulf Hagas, the “Grand Canyon of Maine,” and canoe on nearby Little Lyford Pond. Watch for wading moose on an early morning kayak tour from Medawisla or hike to views of Mt. Katahdin. Then relax in the company of other guests over a home-cooked dinner with fresh salad, homemade breads, entrée, and dessert served at both lodges.
Fly-fishing enthusiasts can find solitude at area streams and remote ponds while casting flies for prized, genetically pure native brook trout that have not been crossed with hatchery-raised fish. Landlocked salmon and lake trout are also plentiful in local waters near Medawisla.
The AMC is a founding host for Maine Woods Discovery, a collaborative effort of regional outdoor recreation tourism partners. For the full selection of Maine Woods Discovery packages, from Katahdin to the Mahoosucs, visit http://mainewoodsdiscovery.com.
