With its recent purchase of the 29,500-acre Roach Ponds Tract, the AMC has played a key role in the completion of a 63-mile-long corridor of conservation land stretching from AMC’s Katahdin Iron Works property near Greenville north to Baxter State Park, comprising nearly 650,000 contiguous acres of conservation land open to public recreational use in the Maine Woods.
The Roach Ponds Tract connects to AMC’s 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property, to create a 66,500-acre expanse of conservation and recreation land under AMC management and forever open to the public for backcountry recreation in Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness region. These land purchases and management commitments mark major milestones in AMC’s Maine Woods Initiative.
