After We Close the Lid

It’s something we don’t like to talk about. It’s something we don’t like to think about. But we all do it. We all poop in the privies. But what is even less discussed: what happens after we close the lid? Last season we had 3,573 visitors spend the night at Guyot Campsite. In our experience we note that most, if not all, of our visitors are using the privy…some visitors even more than once during their stay. That’s a season total of approximately 400 gallons of human waste that was composted onsite and distributed, pathogen-free, back onto the forest floor. The process can turn around 70 gallons worth of human waste into a soil-like substance called humus in just 5 weeks.
