AMC Volunteer Vacations – Costa Rica 2018!

November 13, 2017

January 2018 join us in Costa Rica as we help with storm recovery efforts on community trails after Tropical Storm Nate’s severe flooding and erosion. These AMC Volunteer Vacations combine adventure, community service, recreation and a cultural experience you will never forget!

The program runs for eight days, with two travel days, one free day, and five work days. Project-related training will be provided by an AMC Volunteer Trails Program Crew Leader, under direction of volunteers from the ADISL. This program is open to all 18 and over.

Volunteers hike to work locations along the trail. Travel may involve up to an hour hike in from the trailhead and carrying heavy loads of 20 to 30 pounds. Crews will average 4-6 hours per day in the field with afternoons free for enjoying the surrounding area.

Projects may include storm recovery efforts to reopen trails, building new trail, clearing drainage ditches, brushing back vegetation, out-sloping, general correcting of erosion and erosion problems, moving stone for water bars and embankments or building rock stairs, drainage structures, or retaining walls.

More information about the damage form Tropical Storm Nate and the recovery effort can be found here.

Travel: Volunteers will fly into San Jose, Costa Rica and from there will be shuttled to rustic indoor, shared accommodations in the cloud forest.
