What We’ve Been Training For

June 27, 2017

It’s finally here! After spending four whole weeks training our Crew Leaders for the upcoming season, volunteers are arriving! Sunday night volunteers arrived at our two facilities, Noble View AMC Outdoor Center in Russell and the Kellogg Conservation Center in South Egremont.

The Noble View Basecamp is working on completing a re alignment of the Pitcher Brook Trail. The alignment was cut and opened up by volunteers during the 2016 season and just needs a little fine tuning to become complete. The realignment bumps the trail off of the riparian zone of

the brook; this will help protect the ecology of Pitcher Brook by keeping erosion out of the water. The new section has been blazed and is ready to be walked! Get out there and check it out!

Our Spike Crew this week got to set up camp in Mount Greylock State Reservation Monday and started work on another trail realignment, this one on the Northern Slope of Mount Prospect on the Appalachian Trail. This prroject has been an ongoing project for seven years now. Originally th

e trail went right up the fall line of the mountain causing lots of erosion and leaving a steep, slippery and rocky ascend or descend. Our crew is returning to a switchback that was started last season to build retaining walls and staircases to reinforce the new trail.

We have dedicated multiple weeks to both these projects in an effort to make trails in the region easier to use and more sustainable to protect the natural world around the trails we enjoy. If you haven’t already signed yourself up or someone you love for our Teen Volunteer Trail Crews there is still time before the season ends. Hope to see you out on the trail!
