AMC Supports Clean Air Healthy Kids Act

March 31, 2017

AMC was dismayed by the President’s recent sweeping Executive Order aimed at stalling and undoing climate protections (see March 29 AMC Conservation blog). In rapid response, 30 Senators have introduced a bill, the Clean Air Healthy Kids Act, which would instruct federal agencies to block carrying out the order. We applaud the Senators efforts as they clearly recognize climate change is a serious issue that must not be ignored.  The Executive Order looks to reevaluate important climate policies, including the Clean Power Plan that if enacted would have both climate and health benefits.

“AMC has supported clean air and climate policies for decades, because our members want cleaner air for healthy outdoor recreation and they understand that climate change is a serious problem,” said AMC’s Director of Conservation Susan Arnold. “The science is clear on humans’ role in disrupting our climate from the burning of fossil fuels. AMC’s own climate data shows the New Hampshire mountains are already warming, with the snow season shortening and snowpack melting out earlier in spring. We know enough to act and should.”

AMC’s long-term monitoring of acid rain, ozone, and particulate haze pollution in the White Mountains of New Hampshire has documented significant improvement because of Clean Air Act targeted cleanup of fossil fuel sources that emit pollution. The climate provisions this order looks to stop would have further improved air quality. Weakening efforts aimed at clean air is the wrong direction for our country.
