To meet its mission of protecting the rivers of the Appalachian region, the AMC currently focuses on protecting instream flow from excessive water withdrawals, ensuring public access and recreation opportunities because river waters are a publicly owned resource, protecting critical watershed lands from development and mitigating the impacts of hydroelectric dams to aquatic ecosystems, water quality and recreation during a dam's required relicensing process.
The AMC's river and watershed protection policy strategies are science based and involve both staff and volunteers.
AMC is working to protect river ecology as well as paddler safety by providing guidance on navigating streams with large woody vegetation. Learn more >>
