What’s At Stake
Certain areas of public lands offer unique natural, recreational, and scenic values that require the limits on timber harvesting and intense recreational use that Wilderness designation provides. And designated areas require ongoing monitoring and stewardship.

What We’re Doing
Since passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964, AMC has fought for designation of new wilderness areas on public land, as well as sound management of current and potential wilderness areas. We also work to educate the public to be good stewards of these important resources. AMC’s efforts in support of wilderness include:

  • Support of new wilderness designation, working with partners
  • Monitoring and advocacy for air quality in Class I Wilderness areas
  • Support for sound management of current Wilderness areas, and protection of current roadless areas
  • Education of the public on Leave No Trace principles in the backcountry
