Conservation Funding

*BREAKING NEWS*
The list of projects up for funding in the 2009 fiscal year has been released! To see a list of the projects in AMC's region and access fact sheets about those projects, click here.

Every year, Congress and the federal government provide funds to protect important lands in the U.S. through the federal appropriations process. These lands provide all Americans places to hike, swim and picnic, they purify our air and water, provide homes to wildlife and have renewable resources like forests.  Some of this protection occurs through conservation easements or by government or non-profit organizations purchasing the lands.

One example of conservation funding in action is AMC's Katahdin Iron Works (KIW) project in Maine. The KIW project received over $4 million in federal funds from the Forest Legacy program, administered by the Forest Service. Federal funds alone will not protect KIW, but the federal money is an important piece to protecting this irreplaceable landscape.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are the home of a number of important conservation projects that need funding from Congress to make sure they are protected. To read about lands in the Northern Forest, click here, and click here to view the Northern Forest project map (PDF, 83K).  For lands in the Mid-Atlantic Highlands, click here, and click here to view the Mid-Atlantic project map.
