Sterling Forest. Photo by Geoff WelchAMC supports the following funding requests for the FY2012 Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill, including:

  • $11 million ($10 million for acquisition and $1 million for technical assistance) for the Highlands Conservation Act
  • $900 million for the Land and Water Conservation Fund ($465 million in Federal and $200 million in Stateside)
  • $135 million for the Forest Legacy Program
  • $14 million for the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program
  • $10 million for the Community Forest and Open Space Conservation Program

These programs are essential to a healthy, happy and thriving population and provide economic, ecological and recreational benefits to Americans across the country. There is a great need to fund these programs at the above requests and to work towards their full funding. The availability of public open space amid the populous Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions benefits the well-being of the regions’ citizenry and economy.

Maine

Given the vastness and beauty of Maine, AMC has invested much care, energy and time into this important region. With projects focused on the 100 Mile Wilderness, the Northern Forest, the Mahoosucs Region, and the White Mountain National Forest, AMC strives to achieve permanent protection of these spaces that enrich the region and provide opportunities for recreation and resources. New Hampshire

AMC has been working diligently to conserve and protect some of the same lands that also stretch or reach Maine, including the Northern Forest, the Mahoosucs Region, and the White Mountain National Forest. These areas are some of the most varied and untouched lands we have in the Northeast, making this region incredibly vital ecologically and recreationally. Learn how you can enjoy New Hampshire here.

Southern New England

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Northwestern Connecticut and Southern New Hampshire make up the Southern New England region. AMC works collaboratively with other conservation organizations to protect and promote recreational use of the diverse forests, rivers, mountains, and hiking trails that cross it.

Mid-Atlantic

The Mid-Atlantic region refers to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. This region contains the Housatonics, the Ramapos, and the Michaux State Forest, all located around the metropolitan areas of New York City, Philadelphia, and Hartford. Click here to find out what AMC is doing in the Mid-Atlantic and here to explore what it has to offer.
