Conservation Mapping & Planning
Use of sophisticated computer mapping technology — known as the Geographical Information System, or GIS — helps us gather and analyze information on the natural resources and development patterns of the Northern Forest, the Central Appalachian region (including the Highlands region), and other areas. This work promotes land conservation and stewardship by identifying areas with high concentrations of important natural and recreational resources.
Land Awareness
- Identifying Threats, Opportunities in Central Appalachian Region
Identification of 12 high-priority areas for open space conservation in this region, which includes the Highlands in New Jersey, offers information on key natural and recreational resources, threats to those resources, and the potential for significant land conservation.
- Planning Conservation Priorities in the Northern Forest
The AMC's maps provide an understanding of the progress and possibilities for large-scale land protection in the Northern Forest. The data captured helps to identify important wildland areas, track land sales and ongoing conservation projects, and develop and promote specific land conservation proposals.
- Preserving Treasures of the White Mountain National Forest
AMC research has identified 16 roadless areas that deserve stronger protection during the current WMNF forest planning process.
- Utilizing Interactive Mapping
Our new Interactive Mapping Service allows you to access a wealth of geographic information about the Northern Forest and Central Appalachian regions. Select maps focusing on conservation issues and other environmental topics; then choose the data and level of detail you'd like to see.
