Satellite Images Help Researchers Track Forest Clearing Near Maine Lakes

Satellite images help researchers track forest clearing near Maine lakes
This false-color image was derived from Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery from the summer of 1997. It covers an area of about 20 by 30 miles around Moosehead and Chesuncook Lakes in northern Maine. In this image, softwood forest is dark green, hardwood forest is red, water is black, and non-forest areas (roads, wetlands and recent clear-cuts) are lighter colors. Images such as these are being used by AMC researchers to map the extent and distribution of forest clearing over the past three decades in northern New England.
