Below you can download and print the materials you will need to become a Mountain Watch alpine plant monitor.  By recording your observations on the flowering activities of these alpine plants you will be adding to a growing citizen-science database that will help us to better understand these plants and detect potential impacts of climate change on our mountains and region.

  • Plan a trip to your favorite mountain above treeline during Flower Watch Month (June) or any time late May through August.
  • Bring along materials downloaded from table below and a pencil.
  • Locate and identify 1 or more of the target species using the field guide(s) below, mark your location on the datasheet or map, and record your observations.
  • When you are back from your hike, drop off or mail the datasheet to one of the AMC destinations listed on the form.

Novice or Amateur Botanist? For those less familiar with flowering plants, the novice materials only require that you write down whether the plant is flowering or not. For those with some familiarity, the amateur botanist materials require more detailed observations about which phase(s) the plant is in; bud burst, flowering, fruiting, etc…
