Guided Hut to Hut Adventure: Alpine Wildflowers

June 11-14, 2008 (Joe Dodge Lodge, Lakes of the Clouds Hut, Mizpah Spring Hut)

Take in the full range of mountain environments as we begin our hike in the northern hardwood forest and eventually climb to the alpine tundra, where tiny flowering plants carpet the mountain ridges. Traversing the southern Presidential Range gives us ample opportunity to explore the ridge in full bloom. Trip leaders include AMC Staff Naturalist Nancy Ritger  (June 11-14) and AMC Alpine Ecologist Doug Weihrauch (June 16-19).

Guided program, lodging, dinner and breakfast are included in the package rate.

Alpine Garden Tours

Welcome to spring in the alpine zone. Join us as we discover the wonders of life above treeline in the White Mountains on this one day natural history exploration. We'll begin with an overview of the day then drive up the Auto Road and spend the day hiking through the Alpine Garden on the eastern slope of Mountain Washington. We will examine the exquisite alpine flowers in bloom, discuss alpine adaptations, and compare alpine plant communities. This trip includes a moderate three-mile hike on steep, rocky terrain. Includes instruction, transportation up and down the Mount Washington Auto Road, and a hearty trail lunch.

Price: $65 members/$72 non-members. Price includes van ride to/from Alpine Garden, instruction, lunch, copy of Field Guide to New England Alpine Summits.

Flower Table Talks at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center
Join AMC naturalists and research staff in the courtyard for short informative talks on alpine flowers. Find out which flowers are blooming and where. Staff will explain the latest Mountain Watch initiative in which you can participate during your hike.

Alpine & Wildflower at AMC Highland Center

June is a wonderful time of year to visit the White Mountains! Join us at the AMC’s Highland Center as we explore the fragile world of alpine plants and flowers during their late spring bloom. Events and activities will include lectures from the foremost experts on high-altitude flora, educational displays, and even guided visits to the tundra-like alpine region of the nearby Presidential Range. You can see plants and flowers that grow in just a small handful of places in the world and discover more about how they adapt to the extreme environment found above treeline. No matter what your sense of adventure, we’re sure you’ll find a way to have fun and learn something new along the way.

Explore the mountains during spring bloom from forest floor to mountain summits! Join AMC Naturalists on this wildflower adventure. Naturalists will discuss plant zones and adaptation, identify wildflowers and birdsongs. Spring is a beautiful time to discover, or rediscover the White Mountains.
