Fall colorYou're invited to become a mountain plant monitor this fall!  New in 2008 AMC is linking up with the national and regional phenology networks by using the same species and protocols to ensure information can be used across programs.

The AMC mountain fall foliage monitoring program is a way for hikers to help collect needed information on the onset of fall color change and subsequent leaf-drop across the northern Appalachian Mountains.  This information linked with climate and weather trends will help us understand how mountain plants respond to climate change.

How to participate:

  • Pick a tree to monitor (currently AMC is tracking only 2; Yellow Birch and Mountain Ash)
  • Learn more about that tree online before your hike (see links below)
  • Download datasheets, that includes instructions, and bring them on your hike in the mountains
  • Fill out while hiking and return to AMC
  • Consider Adopt-A-Peak, a repeat monitoring of the same trees or plants in a season and in future years
