Plants growing above treeline demonstrate a number of specialized adaptations that allow them to survive in such a harsh environment.  Look for plants with these different types of adaptations as you hike in the alpine zone.  By carefully observing which plants grow where and what adaptations they have, you can learn about the microenvironment that these plants experience.
