Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Gulfside Trail, on the Appalachian Trail. White Mountain National Forest, NH. Photo: Jerry The Appalachian Trail (AT) stretches approximately 2,168.1 miles from Georgia to Maine. Since 1948, when Earl Shaffer completed the first "thru-hike" from end to end of the trail, some 6,000 thru-hikers have followed in his footsteps. Below we offer articles and frequently asked questions to give a sense of the trail and the experience of hiking its complete distance.
