AMC Chapter Trails Challenge: What Counts

Chapter Trail Volunteers near the Mohican Outdoor Center, Blairstown, NJ. Photo: AMC Trails Dept. What counts toward a Chapter’s additional miles:

  • A trail that an AMC members commits to maintaining for at least three years counts toward the trails challenge. The adopter should also plan to pass the trail on to other AMC members when he or she is no longer to continue maintenance.
  • If the “adopters” are taking part in maintenance on a series of trails on an as needed basis, but not one specific length of trail each year. (for example, maintaining the trails within a state reservation) AMC can assist in calculating or estimating your mileage based on the number of days or hours your adopters contribute.
  • In some chapters, maintenance of river miles may be an appropriate way to participate in the trails challenge.
  • If your chapter is a regular partner with another organization, those miles may be eligible. For example, if your Chapter adopts or maintains trails for an organization such as the New York New Jersey Trails Conference, those miles count for the AMC Chapter Trails Challenge as well.
  • If your chapter facilitates school group adoption of trails, those miles may be eligible.

If your chapter has suggestions for how to contribute that do not seem to fit the above criteria please contact Heather Clish at hclish@outdoors.org.
