Metacomet-Monadnock-Mattabesett National Scenic Trail Feasibility StudyBackground The Metacomet Monadnock Mattabesett (MMM) Trail system consists of three trails: the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail in Massachusetts, and the Metacomet and Mattabesett Trails in Connecticut. The trails collectively cover 190 miles from the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border south toward Long Island Sound. In 2002, the National Park Service initiated a feasibility study of the MMM Trail system with two goals:
The National Park Service released the draft report resulting from this study in August 2006. For more information, visit the MMM National Scenic Trail Study website. AMC’s CommentsAs principal steward of the trail in Massachusetts, AMC is pleased by the study's findings that many attributes of the MMM Trail system make it worthy of National Scenic Trail designation. Read AMC’s initial comments based on a preliminary review of the study. Read AMC's final comments (PDF) submitted to the National Park Service. AMC’s Berkshire Chapter initially constructed the 89-mile Metacomet-Monadnock (M-M) Trail, which includes the Massachusetts portion of the MMM Trail system included in the feasibility study, during a span of 15 years starting in 1951. Today, Berkshire Chapter M-M Trail Committee volunteers continue to maintain and manage the trail, which crosses both public and private land in 19 Massachusetts communities stretching from Agawam to Royalston. Less than half of the M-M Trail is considered permanently protected for public use, and the trail’s protection was identified as a top priority in Massachusetts’ “Commonwealth Connections,” which presents a greenway vision for the state. |
