Volunteer Trail Opportunities

Get out, get dirty, and give back! Each year the AMC depends on more than 2,500 trail volunteers who contribute their time, energy, and enthusiasm to the Trails Program.

In a typical year, people just like you volunteer approximately 18,000 hours...building approximately 1,200 feet of bog bridging, completing about 1,000 feet of screewall, installing more than 300 feet of drainage, and building about 100 cairns! Local volunteers help maintain 1,700 miles of trails each year.

  • Volunteer Crews — Become a steward of the trails through participating in day or weekend Work Parties, and one- to three-week Volunteer Vacations! From Maine to New Jersey, you can get involved in one of these unique programs. See the full 2009 schedule of Volunteer Vacations, Work Parties, and Skills Sessions.

  • Chapter Trail Work Opportunities - Volunteer to help maintain state and local trails. Generally these programs involve day trips, with some overnights at base camps, and up to 4 miles of hiking into a work site. Visit http://trips.outdoors.org and search on "Trail Work" as an activity.

  • Chapter Trails Challenge - To take part in the Challenge, look no further than your favorite hiking trails or parks. AMC is looking for volunteers to adopt trails that are close to home or further afield.

  • Adopt-A-Trail — Adopt an orphan trail and maintain it at your own pace.

  • AT Corridor Monitors — Join us in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire to care for your favorite section of the Appalachian Trail.

  • Alpine Stewardship Volunteers — Help protect the fragile alpine zone environment in Franconia Notch, New Hampshire, through on-site education. This collaborative effort between the AMC Trails Department and the U.S. Forest Service is vital to the health of that region.
