About the Crew

Cardigan Lodge trail volunteers spend three weekends each year working with experienced leaders and taking on projects from basic brushing to advanced rock work and wood structure. You don’t need to be an expert to join, and can bring the whole family. All abilities and efforts are appreciated.

The volunteer trail crew works from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. You can arrive at Cardigan Lodge anytime after 2 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday morning, the crew convenes and is organized into groups with experienced leaders. After a tool safety talk, the groups set out to projects on the trails of Mt. Cardigan with their tools for the day. Typical work may involve clearing brush from the trails, cleaning drainages, repairing drainage features or steps on the trail, or painting blazes. Occasionally there may also be a large project, like a bridge replacement.

Water and snack breaks are encouraged and taken throughout the day. Lunch is on the trail. At the end of the day Saturday, crews return to Cardigan Lodge to wrap up their day with showers and dinner. Sunday’s work ends at 1:00 to allow time to travel home or further enjoy activities around Cardigan

Camp Life

You can expect to find the crew a friendly and fun group of people. Even though we work hard on the trail, back at the lodge there is time to relax, swim or play in the evenings, early morning, and Sunday afternoon. Crews stay in bunkrooms at the newly renovated Cardigan Lodge. A light buffet dinner is provided on Friday evening for trail volunteers as they arrive. A family-style dinner is provided Saturday night. Breakfast and trail lunches are provided both Saturday and Sunday.

At the May and October weekends, everyone pitches in with kitchen clean-up, and at the September weekend, Lodge staff are on hand. At the October weekend, the crew celebrates with a Halloween party, complete with pumpkin carving and a costume party.
