Come join a friendly, fun, and family-oriented trail crew for one weekend a month in the mid-Atlantic region! The Mohican Trail Crew is an all-volunteer weekend crew based out of the Mohican Outdoor Center that is nestled in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA) in Blairstown, NJ. The crew is ideal for individuals and families with children 6 years old and up. No experience or special skills required, just a desire to give back to the trails in the DWGNRA in NJ and PA. There are various types of trail maintenance opportunities for everyone. First-timers are welcome!
About the Crew
Mohican Trail Crew volunteers spend one weekend a month (Saturday & Sunday, April-November) on the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area trails working on various projects during the day and returning to the Mohican Outdoor Center (MOC) at night. Trail crew work weekends start on Saturday mornings at 8:45 a.m. at the MOC main lodge (option to arrive Friday p.m.) with introductions and a description of the weekend’s trail work projects. This is followed by a tool safety talk given by the trail crew leader; then the trail crew packs up the tools before driving out to the trailhead. The trail crew then hikes in to the project sites with gear and tools and begins working on the trails. Water and lunch breaks are encouraged and taken throughout the day. On Saturday afternoon, volunteers return to MOC with day wrap-up, showers, and a $6.00 optional spaghetti dinner (vegetarian option available). Sunday starts off again at 8:45 a.m. and wraps up around 3 p.m. to allow for time to travel back home.
While staying overnight at the Mohican Outdoor Center the crew stays in a bunk-style cabin with kitchen. Except for the optional spaghetti dinner, you are responsible for your own meals. The entire crew helps with crew cabin chores while staying at MOC.
Camp Life
Even though we work hard on the trail, back at MOC there is plenty of time to relax and enjoy camp. The Appalachian Trail and many other scenic trails are easily accessible from camp. On most Saturday nights, camp staff and local musicians meet in the main lodge to put on a show or just hang out, listen to stories, or play games. You can expect to find the crew a friendly and fun group of people. Many volunteers have been participating for years and welcome new faces.
