Frequently Asked Questions explain details of trail crews
Registration
Q. How do I register?
A. To join an AMC trail crew, read though the information pages on this Website. For all long programs ("Weeklong Crews") and short programs in the White Mountain and Berkshires, use this registration form (PDF). For short programs in other locations, use the contact information noted on the schedule. When we receive your registration, we’ll send you a packet of information to prepare you for participating in a trail crew. It also contains forms that you must complete and send in with your payment. Once we get your forms and payment, we’ll send you a confirmation that will hold your place on the crew. If your desired crew is full, we will contact you and let you know if there’s a waiting list. Some crews fill quickly, so register early!
Q. Where can I get more information?
A. For specific details, please contact the phone number or e-mail address listed with each volunteer opportunity.
Locations
Q. On which trail will I be working?
A. Unless noted in the program, specific project locations are unavailable prior to your arrival at your rendezvous point. Our work is determined on a weekly, and sometimes daily, basis depending on project needs and weather. (See also general information on crew locations.)
Fees
Q. What am I paying for?
A. The fully tax-deductible program fee helps defray the cost of food, shelter, and leadership for the volunteer crews. Without these funds we would be unable to operate volunteer crews, or to maintain our trails.
Crew Profile
Q. Who can volunteer?
A. We're looking for volunteers who have enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and pitch in to the best of their ability. Experience is not needed, unless noted in the description. However, the work is strenuous and the conditions often difficult, so good health is important. We'll provide training in safety procedures, the use of hand tools, and techniques of trail construction and maintenance.
Q. Do I need to be exceptionally fit to participate?
A. While you don't need to spend months lifting weights in a gym, overall fitness is important. You will be working long, strenuous days and carrying a full pack into the woods for overnights. You must be eager to face the physical challenges of trail work!
