Plan Your Grafton Loop Experience

A raging river through corridor of trees. Photo: Maine Appalachian Trail ClubThis rugged 34-mile trail cuts through remote backcountry, much of it along private land. Seven designated campsites are located on the trail.  Please print a copy of the map (PDF format) when planning your trip.

Eastern Half of Trail - Northern Trailhead

The northern trailhead of the eastern half of the GLT is located in Grafton Notch State Park on Route 26. Here there is a large trailhead parking lot, where the Appalachian Trail meets Route 26, about 13 miles from Bethel, Maine.

Eastern Half of Trail - Southern Trailhead

The southern trailhead of the eastern half of the GLT is located just north of where Eddy Road meets Route 26 in Newry, Maine.

1) Travel approximately 4.7 miles North on Route 26 from Route 2 in Newry. There is a green street sign on the left, identifying Eddy Road.

2) Turn left here on the rough gravel road and park in the field. For your safety and that of your vehicle, do not park on the shoulders of Route 26.

3) Do not continue down Eddy Road.

4) To get to the actual trailhead, walk along the mowed path, behind the lilac bush, through the field back to Route 26, cross the road to a blue blaze on a post in front of you.

Western Half of Trail - Southern Trailhead

By landowner agreement, there is no parking at this trailhead.  Follow the directions above for the Eastern Half - Southern Trailhead, then walk 0.6 mi. south on the shoulder of ME 26 to a sign for the Grafton Loop Trail.
