The AMC's Professional Trail Crew At a Glance
The AMC’s Trail Crew, founded in 1919, is one of the oldest, best-known, and most respected professional trail crews in the nation. With a reputation for hard work and high standards, the trail crew works to protect and restore natural resources and the environment — and to provide safe and positive experiences for hikers — through high-quality trail work.
Who They Are
- 22 highly motivated, energetic, young men and women.
- On average, possess one to five years of crew experience and/or service.
- Hard-working, physically fit, hard-core outdoors lovers.
- Dedicated to trail preservation and restoration.
What They Do
- Specialize in heavy reconstruction projects.
- Construct trail structures with native and fabricated materials.
- Build rock steps, rock and water bars, drainage structures, puncheon, cairns, scree walls, foot and ski bridges, log ladders, etc.
- Maintain 350 miles of trails in the White Mountains alone.
- Maintain more than 800 trail signs in the White Mountains.
Expertise They Deliver
- Knowledge of trail layout, rigging, winching and "hi-line" techniques, trail assessment, and logistics.
- Experienced with axes, chainsaws, hand tools.
