Southern New England

Protecting close-to-home forests, trails, rivers and parks

Our Work

Southern New England has seen a widespread trend of converting forests to development, often threatening pristine areas and challenging resource protection efforts. The region also has a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities close to population centers and a wealth of state forests and parks that are excellent places for introductory activities and more adventurous trips that require relatively little travel time. AMC works to protect southern New England’s forested landscape and iconic recreational experiences.

Trails

Southern New England has two National Scenic Trails and AMC plays a leadership role in both. AMC maintains the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts and Connecticut as well as the New England National Scenic Trail in Massachusetts. AMC collaborates with The Trustees of Reservations to support the Bay Circuit Alliance in the completion, protection, and promotion of the Bay Circuit Trail. Each summer, AMC organizes volunteer teen trail crews to work in the Berkshires and on the Bay Circuit Trail. We are also working to extend the Connecticut River Paddlers' Trail from Vermont and New Hampshire into Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Energy

The majority of power consumed in New England is consumed in Southern New England. As the region moves toward cleaner energy to meet greenhouse gas reduction mandates and targets, the choices made here will impact the mix and type of energy development across the Northeast, and how it is brought here. Often, open space and protected lands are threatened as the path of least resistance for new energy sources. AMC works to protect trails and conserved land from impacts the proposed energy projects and supporting policies that maximize energy efficiency and encourage a diverse mix of clean energy sources that avoid impacts to the Northeast’s remaining open space.
