We are working closely with the communities of Piscataquis County as we develop and implement the MWI.
Local community and economic development leaders, along with the State of Maine and Maine’s Congressional delegation, have been important advocates and partners as we seek public and private funds to support the project.
Building on the early success of collaborative programs with local schools, AMC is working with educators to offer hands-on outdoor learning opportunities to all schoolchildren in Piscataquis County as part of the Maine Woods Initiative.
Through its Moosehead Area Schools Project, AMC is offering outdoor learning experiences to every elementary school, middle school, and high school student in Piscataquis County, at least three times over the course of his or her school career.
AMC’s sporting camps and 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property provide a nearby venue for hands-on learning in the outdoors.
AMC has also worked with a local education collaborative to get schoolchildren on the KIW site for winter recreation programs and support outdoor skills courses. It has worked with local groups on nature based tourism efforts such as the 100-Mile Wilderness Dogsled Race. It continues to collaborate with local snowmobile clubs to accommodate snowmobile access to AMC’s land.
AMC is a member of the KI-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest, an organization that manages public access into the area for several private landowners.
