AMC has protected two key parcels of forestland, as part of its goal to protect over 100,000 acres in the 100-Mile Wilderness. View map>>
AMC's Roach Ponds parcel protects 29,500 acres, creating a 63-mile-long corridor of conservation land stretching from AMC’s Katahdin Iron Works property near Greenville north to Baxter State Park, comprising nearly 650,000 contiguous acres of conservation land open to public recreational use. AMC has donated a conservation easement on the Roach Pond property to the State of Maine, ensuring the parcel is protected from development in perpetuity. Just as important to hikers and backpackers, the purchase protects and enhances the Appalachian Trail viewshed by buffering more than 20 miles of the trail corridor.
AMC's Katahdin Iron Works property includes the headwaters of the West Branch of the Pleasant River, an important natural resource that supports a native brook trout fishery and flows through Gulf Hagas, a National Natural Landmark. Several remote ponds valued for paddling and fly-fishing are part of the property. The parcel buffers 17 miles of the protected Appalachian Trail corridor and Gulf Hagas area, offering additional wildlife and viewshed protection. AMC has created a 10,000-acre ecological reserve to permanently protect the West Branch watershed, and Special Management Zones that will protect other riparian areas and unique natural areas such as Caribou Bog.
AMC will sustainably manage most of the remaining acreage as working forest, supporting the local economy while protecting the ecological values of the region.
