Maine Public Radio news story on the Maine Woods Initiative (Windows Media Player required), reported by Susan Sharon:
"With so many Maine paper companies giving up their traditional land holdings in the state, selling it off to investment groups or selling the development rights, it would seem strange for the nation's oldest conservation and recreation organization to get into the timber management business. But that's exactly what the Appalachian Mountain Club is doing near Moosehead Lake. As Susan Sharon reports, the AMC has purchased 37-thousand acres from International Paper and has big plans for habitat protection, recreation and even sustainable forestry."
