What’s At Stake?
Since the mid-1990s, the Northern Forest has experienced dramatic change in land ownership and use patterns, creating unprecedented threats from development, liquidation harvesting, and subdivision. While permanently protected land have doubled since 1995, more than 80% of the Northern Forest remains unprotected.

What We're Doing

• AMC is a founding member of the Northern Forest Alliance (NFA), a coalition of conservation, recreation, and forestry organizations committed to the protection of the Northern Forest. The Alliance advocates for federal land protection funding and community-based conservation focused on vibrant communities and strong local economies. See NFA FY10 Project Report (PDF) >>
  
• Through NFA, AMC is involved in the Eastern Forests Partnership, which seeks to coordinate conservation funding requests for the Eastern U.S.

• Get involved in Mountain Watch. Our citizen-science program includes an alpine flower watch covering the high peaks of the Northern Forest
  
• Support our Maine Woods Initiative, which provides local forest product jobs and is creating new nature-based tourism opportunities in the 100-Mile Wilderness region.
