Junior Naturalist Program

This exciting, hands-on, environmental awareness program was designed to help young visitors to AMC Destinations gain an understanding of the natural world and their important role in helping to protect it.

When kids stay at an AMC Destination, they’re encouraged to complete a Junior Naturalist activity book with environmental lessons. Through multiple-choice questions, crossword puzzles, and open-ended questions, kids practice Leave No Trace Ethics, learn how to read contour lines on a map, test their wilderness skills, observe the weather on their hike, and much more. Once they’ve completed the activities in the book, kids are awarded a red fox patch and certificate officially designating them “Junior Naturalists.” Kids walk away not just with a patch, though—they leave with more respect for the natural world and an understanding of their role in protecting our planet, whether they’re on vacation, hiking in the mountains, or playing in their back yard.

Want to encourage your kids to be Junior Naturalists at home? Try these activities with your kids to help them learn about the nature in their own back yard:

The Junior Naturalist program is sponsored by L.L. Bean and the William T. Morris Foundation.
