Join the dynamic YOP community and open up a world of opportunity to the youth you serve.

Benefits to Youth Workers
As a youth worker participating in YOP, you can count on extensive support from the AMC. All trained YOP youth workers are eligible to receive:

  • Free use of outdoor equipment for taking youth backpacking and camping.
  • Reduced rates for YOP groups staying at AMC Destinations.
  • Workshops offering advanced and specialized training in outdoor skills.
  • Trip-planning and logistical support.
  • Participation in special YOP events, such as the Harbor Island Camp-out.
  • Networking opportunities with other youth workers and agencies.
  • Individual AMC membership, which includes discounts on AMC Outdoor Explorations and books, and a subscription to AMC Outdoors.

Benefits to Youth
Young people who participate in trips led by YOP leaders benefit in countless ways as they step into new and exciting environments. These outdoor adventure experiences provide youth with the opportunity to develop:

  • Leadership skills.
  • Self-confidence and self-respect.
  • Trust.
  • A sense of responsibility for self, others, the community, and the environment.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Teamwork experience.
  • Decision-making skills.

How to Get Involved
Most youth workers begin their involvement with YOP by participating in the Outdoor Leadership Training (OLT). These trainings take place in April, May, June, and October typically, but planning and registration begin much earlier, so contact us at any time to find out how YOP can work for you and your youth.

OLT is a four- or five-day training program designed with the youth worker in mind. You will learn the skills necessary to lead trips with your youth, and you will focus on developing and practicing different leadership styles in the outdoors. This training will cover:

  • Outdoor leadership skills.
  • Equipment use.
  • Navigation.
  • Time-management strategies.
  • Environmental ethics.
  • Group dynamics.
  • Proper clothing.
  • Nutrition.

The OLT is offered at least four times each year, and scholarships are available for agencies with limited resources. Through successful completion of our OLT, you will gain the skills and experience necessary to lead your own trips, as well as access to equipment, trip planning resources, and advanced skills workshops.
