Guided Fly Fishing Workshops

Whether you're new to fly fishing or need a refresher course on the sport, visit AMC's Gorman Chairback Lodge & Cabins and Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins this spring or fall for a weekend Fly Fishing Workshop. These programs will help you build the skills you need to be a proficient angler.

All workshops include indoor lessons on flies, rods, and knots, and outdoor sessions on handling and casting, as well as an afternoon of guided fly fishing on our 70,000 acres of conservation lands. Scheduled during the peak season of fly fishing in Maine, AMC's Fly Fishing Workshops are excellent ways to experience the sport in a beautiful, peaceful setting.

Equipment

All participants will need to purchase at least a two-day Maine fishing license and bring a fly, rod, reel, line, and leader (this set up is also available for rent, $25/program). Once you make your reservation, AMC's staff will recommend an assortment of flies to bring to the workshop.

Local Fly Fishing Outfitters and Guides

AMC employs Registered Maine Guides and also partners with several local guides, who can offer lessons to beginners or guide seasoned anglers to some of the best fishing spots on the property. Rates can run from $225 to $300 for a half-day, small group session, or from $375 to $450 for a full day, depending on the guide and specific services required. Other guided options nearby include drift boat fishing on the East Branch of the Kennebec and West Branch of the Penobscot, and wade fishing on the Roach River.

For a local fly fishing experience, contact one of the following outfitters or Maine Guide services directly, and mention you are staying with AMC at Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins or Gorman Chairback Lodge & Cabins. Guiding season tends to be very busy during peak fishing season, so book as early as possible.

AMC's Maine Wilderness Lodges have a limited number of fly rods to rent and a small selection of flies for sale. Local outfitters can provide a full range of fishing gear and supplies along with state fishing licenses.

Fly Fishing Tips

Note: tips on hatch timing and fly selection come from AMC Registered Maine Guides.

Match the Hatch

Open water fishing season in our neck of the woods runs from April 1st through September 30th. AMC's Maine Wilderness Lodges (MWL) open for the season in early May. Fast fishing for wild brook trout is the draw at First and Second Little Lyford Ponds (location of Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins), while Long Pond (location of Gorman Chairback Lodge and Cabins) features wild brook trout, lake trout, and landlocked salmon. Anglers will also find great opportunities on any number of the remote ponds that dot our property.

Hatch timing varies from year to year and depends on many different factors. We recommend checking out one of the many hatch guides available.

Choosing Flies

From early May through the middle of June, March Brown nymphs and dry flies are the angler's choice on the smaller ponds, while Grey Ghost streamers or other smelt imitators are good options on the larger ponds. Caddis flies and Wood Special are some favorites among local anglers.

Early July brings the hexagenia (green drake) hatch, which typically brings heavy action and large fish at twilight. This is a good time for anglers to utilize the many recreational activities MWL has to offer during the day and get onto the water in the evening for some exciting fishing action.

Mid-to late September is a great time for fly fishing in Maine. This biting insects have subsided, the temperatures are mild, and the brook trout are especially brilliant in their fall spawning colors.

Look for brook trout that run from 6 to 18 inches, with an average of 9-13 inches. Lake trout (togue) and landlocked salmon from 10 to 24 inches, some weighing 5 pounds or more, can be caught in the larger ponds.

Our Fly Fishing Locations

AMC owns and manages 70,000 acres of conservation and recreation land in the heart of the 100-Mile Wilderness, offering a variety of fishing opportunities. Sportsmen may access the property year-round, including those portions of the spring and fall seasons when AMC's three wilderness lodges are closed.

The property contains the headwaters of the West Branch of the Pleasant River along with the headwaters of the Roach River. Both support a strong population of wild brook trout, an increasing rarity in the East. Anglers should consult the state's open water fishing laws and rules for regulations regarding the use of certain fishing gear on certain bodies of water.
