August Camp 2008

August Camp in Pilot Creek, WYThe AMC's August Camp changes its location each year to take advantage of hiking and canoeing opportunities throughout North America. Typically, the camp is held in the Northeast and locations in the West or Northwest on alternating years. Recent sites have included: the Adirondack Mountains in New York; the Northern Presidentials in New Hampshire; the North Cascades; and the Hi Sierras in California.

The 2008 August Camp will be in Big Sky Country, just south of the MT/WY border. Our base camp will be set up in Pilot Creek in the Northern half of the Shoshone National Forest in WY, just a stone's throw from the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Enjoy breathtaking scenery and outdoor activities in Yellowstone and in the Absaroka and Beartooth mountain ranges of MT and WY.

An intimate tent village for 64 adult campers, August Camp offers one or two week options, plentiful home-cooked meals, nightly campfires, 5 hikes daily—from easy walks to rigorous day hikes—several overnight hikes and a number of water-based activities, and great camaraderie.

Please note: August Camp is now full for all four weeks this summer.  A wait list is forming and if there are any cancellations we will start taking names from the wait list.  Notify the Registrar at the information below if you wished to be placed on the wait list.

Important Info for August Campers: August Camp Committee wants this year’s campers to be aware that the hiking program at Pilot Creek may run a bit differently than in years past – campers may have more opportunity to do exploring of the area on their own. There are regulations in this area of WY and MT that may affect our ability to lead trips in certain areas (such as Yellowstone NP and the Tetons).  Committee members and hike leaders are working closely with Forest Service and Parks personnel to develop an interesting and varied program of hikes in as wide an area as possible. In addition to formally led hikes, campers will be able to use camp vans to do hikes or sightseeing in Yellowstone, the Tetons and other areas on their own.  Hike leaders will have info on the region and the Parks to share with campers, and vans will be available for camper use, as long as each group has an approved driver. For this reason we suggest you consider volunteering to be a driver if you think you might want to do some exploring on your own with a small group.  The more drivers we have, the more flexibility campers will have.
