Backcountry Campsites & Shelters

The AMC maintains numerous popular backcountry campsites in New Hampshire's White Mountains and Maine's Mahoosuc Mountains, most of which are located along the Appalachian Trail, and are managed under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Forest Service and the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands. These campsites help conserve the backcountry environment by concentrating already high overnight use in designated areas. 

AMC also offers backcountry sites in Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness region through the KI-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest, as a service of the Maine Woods Initiative.

• Eliza Brook — shelter, two hardened tent pads.

• Guyot — shelter, 4 single platforms, two double platforms.

• Carlo Col — shelter, three single platforms, two double platforms.

White Mountain/Mahoosuc Campsites without Shelters

• 13 Falls — nine hardened tent pads.
• Liberty Springs — seven single platforms, three double platforms.
• Nauman — five single platforms, two double platforms.
• Trident Col — four tent pads.

Maine Woods/100 Mile Wilderness, Maine Campsites and Shelters

• Coyote Rocks -- Paddle in site, two tent pads
• Long Pond -- Drive-in site off logging roads, three tentsites
• Trout Pond -- shelter for up to 8 people

Massachusetts Campsites without Shelters

• Laurel Ridge — one group site, five campsites.

 

Reservations - Maine Woods/100-Mile Wilderness

• Reservations are made through the KI-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest (KIJM), which will collect a fee of $10 per person per night ($9 for Maine residents) during months when the KIJM checkpoints are open (May opening through October).  Call 207-965-8135 to make reservations.  Carry-in/Carry-out.

Group Notification System - White Mountains and Mahoosuc Range

• For small groups (5 people or less), reservations are not accepted; first-come, first-served basis.
• For groups of 6 or more, AMC's Group Notification System must be utilized. Information may be submitted online.

What to Expect - White Mountains and Mahoosuc Range

• All campsites very popular in summer; Liberty Springs, Guyot, and Garfield average more than 20 people per night.
• Campsites open year-round.
• Nine of the most heavily used sites staffed with caretakers from June 1 to Oct. 15 to help minimize impact in the area and promote Leave No Trace camping practices.
• Staffed sites cost $8 per person per night.
