Introduction to Ice Climbing

January 11-13; February 1-3; March 7-9
Highland Lodge at Crawford Notch

This intensive three-day course introduces you to the thrills of ice climbing and is a must for aspiring alpinists. You’ll learn from veteran ice climbers from the International Mountain Climbing School, experts who understand that ice changes all the time and therefore presents new challenges for every ascent.

Emphasizing safety awareness and personal responsibility, IMCS instructors will teach you efficient movement over diverse snow and ice terrain, awareness of objective hazards, rope management, and a better understanding of the demands of climbing in winter. Other topics covered will include knots, belaying, rappelling and the proper use of equipment. You’ll get the chance to practice on lower-angled slabs of ice or challenge yourself on a vertical pillar—all in magnificent Crawford Notch.

This course is best suited for people with some amount of winter experience who want to thoroughly investigate ice-climbing skills on a variety of technical terrains.
