August 4-7
Highland Lodge/Zealand Falls Hut/Galehead Hut
Enjoy backcountry lodging with traditional mountain hospitality in a spectacular setting. Our journey to the AMC High Mountain Huts takes us through the Pemigewasset Wilderness. Steeped in logging and railroad history, it later became known as a "dull brown waste of lifeless, fire-eaten soil and stark white boulders" after the great fire of 1908 destroyed its once-majestic trees. Today, the area is lush, vast, and protected, and stands as a shining example of the resilience of New England forests. You'll explore hardwood forests and beaver ponds and trek over ridges that offer gorgeous views. You'll spend one night each at Zealand Falls Hut and Galehead Hut, where you can enjoy hearty family-style meals, and in the evenings, gaze up at the stars.
This trip is for those in good physical condition who can carry a large day pack and feel comfortable hiking on moderate, rocky terrain.
Minimum age is 18 (16 is accompanied by an adult).
